Compact wheel loaders. CWLs for short. These machines offer a cool combination of features you won’t easily find on other compact machines. They are versatile. Compact wheel loaders are material movers first and foremost, but they can also wield a wide range of attachments from brooms to bale spears. They reach high — larger units over 10 feet — while telescoping variants can lift over 16 feet. CWLs are comfortable. Maybe a little pricier than a skid steer, small wheel loaders compensate with spacious operator cabs that sit high up. They are often more efficient. Compared to skid steers and track loaders, CWLs burn less fuel and have better tire wear because of the way they articulate.
So, where is the segment headed next? We posed that very question — along with, you know, a bunch of others — to Emily Pagura, product marketing manager for John Deere. We’re doing a bunch of interviews with various companies who produce compact wheel loaders, and we’re excited to talk about the John Deere brand. We’re big fans. Maybe we can start off with a quick summary of your compact wheel loader lineup. How many models do you offer? What cool options and tech do you have? Maybe even what differentiators Deere brings to the market?
Pagura: Compact wheel loaders continue to gain popularity because they provide a unique combination of maneuverability, visibility, attachment versatility, and material-handling productivity. John Deere currently offers a broad compact wheel loader lineup that includes both G-Tier and P-Tier models. This lineup, including the 184 G-Tier, 204 G-Tier, 304 G-Tier, 244 P-Tier, 324 P-Tier, Telescopic 326 P-Tier, and 344 P-Tier models, gives customers a large range of easy-to-operate machines for material-handling, construction, landscaping, rental, and agriculture applications.
Across the lineup, customers can choose from multiple coupler styles, high-flow hydraulics, high-lift configurations, telescopic boom technology, and compatibility with a wide variety of attachments. Our P-Tier models also incorporate advanced features such as electrohydraulic controls, ride control, customizable operator settings, and touchscreen displays. One of the biggest differentiators is our industry-exclusive Articulation Plus steering system, standard on P-Tier compact wheel loader machines. This feature combines traditional articulation with rear-wheel steering to deliver an exceptional balance of maneuverability, stability, and load retention while carrying material.
What applications are driving the strongest growth in the compact wheel loader market right now — landscaping, snow removal, agriculture, rental, or something else?
We’re seeing strong demand across landscaping, agriculture, rental, municipal, and general construction applications. Customers increasingly value equipment that can perform multiple tasks throughout the year. Compact wheel loaders offer an attractive combination of material-handling capability, attachment versatility, travel speed, and operator comfort. Rental companies also continue to see strong demand because compact wheel loaders are intuitive to operate and adaptable to a wide range of applications.
Why are some contractors choosing compact wheel loaders over skid steers or compact track loaders for material-handling applications?
Compact wheel loaders excel most in dedicated material-handling applications. Their articulated steering design helps minimize surface disturbance while providing excellent visibility and ride quality. Operators often benefit from higher travel speeds, improved load-carrying stability, and increased comfort when moving materials across larger jobsites. Many customers who spend much of their day loading trucks, handling pallets, stockpiling materials, or transporting loads find that compact wheel loaders provide productivity advantages compared to other compact equipment categories.
Which attachments are popular in the small wheel loader market today? Got a favorite?
Buckets and pallet forks remain among the most widely used attachments, but we’re also seeing strong demand for grapples, snow pushers, snow blowers, angle brooms, and specialty material-handling tools like bale spears or our new MB60 material boom. If we had to choose a favorite, pallet forks are hard to overlook because they dramatically expand machine versatility. Many customers use their compact wheel loader as a dedicated material-handling machine, moving pallets of construction materials, landscape products, and agricultural supplies throughout the day. Given their durability and weight capacity, these attachments help tackle material-handling jobs with confidence.
What coupler options are available on compact wheel loaders today? Are more customers requesting skid steer-style couplers to share attachments across fleets?
Customers today have multiple coupler options depending on machine and application, including ISO-style couplers and Quik-Tatch couplers. We continue to see growing demand for attachment flexibility, especially among mixed fleets that have skid steers and compact track loaders, in addition to the compact wheel loaders. Many customers want the ability to share attachments across machine types, helping maximize attachment utilization and reduce ownership costs. For that reason, the Quik-Tatch, John Deere’s skid steer-style coupler, is popular. We also offer an adapter plate, making machines with the ISO-style coupler compatible with skid steer-style attachments. Compatibility across fleets remains an important consideration when customers evaluate new machines.

Features such as ride control, automatic bucket return-to-dig, boom-height kickout, return-to-carry, creep control, and throttle lock continue to gain importance because they improve consistency, productivity, and ease of operation on the jobsite. On our 326 P-Tier, electrohydraulic controls and touchscreen displays allow operators to customize machine functions and automate repetitive loading tasks. As operators are asked to do more with fewer resources, technologies that simplify operation and improve repeatability continue to gain traction.
What cab comfort features matter most to operators today?
Visibility remains one of the most important considerations when it comes to operator comfort. Operators also prioritize comfortable seating, intuitive machine controls, lower noise levels, in-cab climate control, and easy cab access. Based on industry standards, today’s operators expect equipment that helps reduce fatigue during long shifts. Features such as air-ride heated seats, ergonomic joystick controls, adjustable steering columns, touchscreen displays, and improved HVAC performance all contribute to a more productive operator experience.
How are manufacturers addressing operator shortages and the need for easier machine operation?
Manufacturers are making equipment easier to learn and easier to operate through intuitive controls, simplified machine interfaces, and operator-assist technologies. Features such as electrohydraulic controls, automated loader functions, and customizable machine settings help reduce the learning curve for less experienced operators while allowing experienced operators to work more efficiently. The goal is to improve productivity while reducing operator fatigue and training requirements.
How are compact wheel loaders evolving for snow removal applications?
