Trenchers create neat, uniform openings in the ground, primarily for utility installation, and use a series of specially designed teeth on a continuous chain to cut and remove spoil. Models vary from small walk-behind models that dig several inches wide and several feet deep, to pipeline models that can dig 4 feet wide and nearly 20 feet deep through rock.
