Big Energy Storage Units Can Replace Diesel Gensets
A UK company, Ampd Energy, has launched its next generation of battery electric energy storage systems (ESS) to its global markets and there is a noteworthy taker here in North America — United Rentals.
These large units are meant to displace diesel generators to provide cleaner power.
The company's NextGen ESS are aimed at temporary industrial site power applications in construction, infrastructure, concrete batching, oil and gas, microtunnelling, ports, and mining.
United Rentals is the latest Ampd authorized distribution partner and has taken several Amped NextGen products in an effort to expand its battery fleet in North America.

The NextGen products, Ampd 200 and Ampd 400, follow the Ampd Enertainer, which was built for challenging environments. The Enertainer has so far eliminated over 160,000 tonnes of CO2 and removed an equivalent of over 120,000 cars' worth of air pollution (NOₓ, PM and SO₂), Ampd says.
How much power?
With up to 292 kW / 297 kVA (193 kW / 214 kVA continuous) and up to 585 kW / 595 kVA (386 kW / 428 kVA continuous) respectively, the new ESS are not just an update to the previous range, but are meant to take power capability even further, opening up new markets and power applications.
Both the Ampd 200 and Ampd 400 are certified by SGS, the world's leading product certification body for the ESS industry, to the standards of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

In addition to United Rentals, NextGen ESS are at work in Hong Kong's Lamma Power Station, and WOLFF Onsite (part of the WOLFFKRAN group), has taken an order for the first two Ampd 200 units to land in the UK.
The first was sent straight to a Vinci Construction site.
The global roll out of the NextGen products will continue through 2026 and beyond, the company says.
