A passenger died in a vehicle crash in a construction zone this week in Godfrey, Illinois, according to police.

The driver of an SUV was speeding westbound shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday on West Delmar Avenue near West Homer Adams Parkway, which is under construction, according to a news release the Madison County Sheriff's Office posted on social media.

The vehicle crashed into a concrete barrier in the construction zone and then flipped over several times.

The driver was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition, but the passenger died.

The sheriff's office on Monday said the man was Matthew T. Mangara, 35, of Godfrey.
