Hexagon's Leica, a construction tech provider along the lines of Trimble and Topcon that's seeking a higher profile in North America, is upping its safety game with Xsight360.

Xsight360 is a safety awareness system the complements the company's safety awareness portfolio, including 3D avoidance technology.

The company's aim is to provide an end-to-end solution that unites machine automation, real-time awareness, and cloud-based safety intelligence.

How it works

Leica Xsight360 uses edge-based AI and up to six onboard cameras to provide operators with full 360-degree visibility around heavy equipment.

The system detects people, vehicles, and obstacles in real time, issuing immediate audio and visual alerts to mitigate risks before incidents occur. Operational and video data are simultaneously transmitted to the cloud, where AI-powered analytics generate safety dashboards, incident heatmaps, and compliance reports, enabling occupational health and safety professionals to transform raw data into proactive safety strategies.

3D Avoidance Zone

No, it's not a form of social distancing left over from the pandemic.

Complementing Xsight360 is a dynamic 3D Avoidance Zone system that integrates directly into Leica MC1 machine control software.

This solution allows operators to create or import precise three-dimensional avoidance zones above and below ground.

When machines approach defined danger areas, such as power lines, underground utilities, pedestrian walkways, live traffic lanes, or environmentally sensitive zones, the system automatically controls excavator hydraulics, slowing or stopping machine movement to prevent hazardous incursions.

The system was jointly developed by Leica Geosystems and Xwatch Safety Solutions.

“Dynamic 3D Avoidance Zone system fundamentally changes how safety and productivity coexist on site”, said Neil Williams, Global Sales VP, Machine Control Division, Hexagon.

“By embedding true three-dimensional avoidance directly into our machine control solution, we’re giving operators and contractors an industry-first capability to actively prevent risk as part of the workflow before it becomes an incident. It’s this fusion of precision machine control and intelligent safety awareness that sets Leica Geosystems apart.”
