Ah, snow. Beautiful and cold. Light and heavy. Fun yet frustrating. Snow has its charms, but for equipment pros it adds another layer of challenges (like literally). It buries roads, blocks loading docks, blankets products, and makes jobsites extra sloppy. Luckily, many of the machines you already own can operate snow attachments — buckets, brooms, blowers, pushers, and beyond.

The right attachments can turn big loaders, compact equipment, graders, trucks, and even UTVs into snow-removal pros. But successful snow work requires more than hanging a blade on the front. The attachment must match the machine, conditions, and property. I know it feels a little early to be talking about snow, but September is the time to start preparing for winter — especially when you’re thinking about purchasing new attachments. Let’s take wheel loaders, for example.

How to upfit wheel loaders before the snow flies

Wheel loaders make formidable snow machines. If I had to choose a favorite snow removal machine — and I'm glad you asked — it would be the wheel loader. They offer great pushing power, elevated visibility, fast travel speeds, high reach, and comfy, warm cabs. Compact models add the agility needed to maneuver around smaller parking lots, neighborhoods, loading docks, and other obstacles. I’d suggest you start your snow upfit by looking at the coupler.

Wheel loaders use a variety of different attachment systems. There are hydraulic quick couplers and basic mechanical couplers. Within those configurations, there are different coupler styles. The pin-and-hook style uses a two-step hook-and-lock system that allows operators to swap attachments. There is also the Euro- or Global-style coupler, which is popular in agriculture and larger compact wheel loaders, and ISO couplers, which are also more common on European wheel loaders. Many owners and operators want to switch attachments between machines, so now many compact wheel loaders offer a skid steer-style coupler or ISO-style coupler.

Next, let’s eye those hydraulics. A basic pusher or bucket may require little more than the correct coupler. Snowblowers, angle blades, and wing plows can demand additional flow and hydraulic functions. Third- and fourth-function hydraulics allow operators to angle blades, adjust wings, or control blower chutes without leaving the cab. Do your wheel loaders have those hydraulic functions? Also, understand auxiliary hydraulic flow to the attachment, which powers the attachment. Hydraulic performance is defined by flow, measured in gallons per minute (gpm), and pressure, measured in pounds per square inch (psi). A wheel loader’s aux flow parameters must match the snow attachment’s requirements.   

Traction matters, too. It’s snow, after all. Snow tires offer better control than general-purpose tread on packed snow and slick pavement. Wheel loaders that capitalize on limited-slip differentials or locking axles can provide another advantage. Operators may also benefit from adjustable rimpull, which helps reduce wheelspin. Rimpull is the pushing or pulling force a wheel loader delivers through its tires. Adjustable rimpull lets the operator reduce that force while maintaining hydraulic power — useful when pushing snow or working on slippery surfaces.

Finally, prepare the cab for long, dark shifts. Your operators will thank you because snow removal is hard work. Heat is essential. Heated seats and mirrors are even better. Add high-output LED work lights, warning beacons, and a rearview camera. Ride control can smooth travel, while creep control helps operators maintain attachment speed without driving too fast. Get more from your snow pusher with a back drag kit

Snow pushers are made to move big volumes of snow fast. For large parking lots, equipment yards and other open areas, it’s hard to beat the simplicity of attach and push. But get close to a loading dock, overhead door or building, and that simplicity can become a limitation. A back drag kit helps fill that gap. The operator can drive up to the structure, roll the snow pusher forward, lower the pusher and pull the snow backward into the open. Mastering the cold: operational best practices for CTL snow attachments

3. Condition hydraulic hoses in cold temps. To prevent hydraulic hoses on snowblowers and angle brooms from cracking under sudden high pressure, warm up the hydraulic fluid by operating the loader’s hydraulics slowly before pushing heavy loads. Taking time to condition the fluid and warm up the hoses prior to full operation significantly extends component life.

4. Clean attachments after every shift. Thorough cleaning after every shift is essential for equipment longevity. Immediately remove all accumulated snow, ice, and debris from the attachment after use, paying special attention to washing off salt and de-icing chemicals to prevent rapid corrosion.

5. Maintain regular lubrication and wear parts. Grease all pivot points and lubricate bearings every 10 hours using a cold-rated grease specifically formulated for freezing temperatures. Routinely inspect high-wear components, including cutting edges and shoes on snowblowers, rubber edges on pushers, and broom bristles. Replace the edges and bristles as needed.
