Komatsu Testing Hydrogen Haul Truck

Proof-of-concept test is using a 100-ton haul truck.

Komatsu has converted an HD785 rigid-frame haul truck to hydrogen power and is testing the concept at its Ibaraki plant in Japan. Komatsu is working with Keyou GmbH, a German startup company that specializes in the development and implementation of hydrogen engines for large trucks.

The HD785 mechanical truck is rated to haul 100 tons and 78 cubic yards of material. Operating weight is 162,701 pounds, and it is powered by 1,200-horsepower diesel.

The concept haul truck is equipped with a hydrogen combustion engine and hydrogen tank system, which are co-developed by Komatsu and Keyou. The hydrogen tank is mounted on a platform beside the operator’s cab to maximize hydrogen storage capacity. Additionally, to ensure clear visibility for the operator, cameras and monitors have been installed both inside and outside the cab.

The proof-of-concept tests will focus on evaluating driving performance, continuous operating hours, fuel efficiency, and verifying safety measures related to high-pressure hydrogen gas usage.

Komatsu cites interest from mining customers in adopting hydrogen engines as a means of reducing carbon output. Hydrogen engines can replace diesel in existing machines, enabling conversion at a “relatively lower cost, because the power-train components of existing diesel-powered machines can be used without replacement,” according to Komatsu.
