The new Kobelco SK850LC-11 excavator enters the market as the largest conventional excavator in the company’s North American lineup. These pictures here just don’t do it justice. Here’s an awesome old video that shows this new model’s predecessor working in the field. The SK850LC debuted in 2006, but it’s evolved over the years. At roughly 85 metric tons and more than 500 horsepower, this new SK850LC-11 targets contractors moving serious amounts of dirt, rock, and material. This ultimate excavator would be focused on mass excavation, quarry operations, heavy civil construction, mining support, and large infrastructure projects.

Kobelco positions the SK850LC-11 above the SK520LC-11, giving fleet owners a larger option when production requirements exceed what a 54.9-metric-ton excavator can deliver. The SK850LC-11 weighs between 190,700 and 192,300 pounds and uses a 512-horsepower Isuzu Tier 4 Final engine. Kobelco says the machine delivers nearly 90,600 pounds of bucket digging force and more than 61,000 pounds of arm digging force. That’s some serious digging power.

Where the SK850LC-11 fits in the Kobelco lineup

The SK850LC-11 now sits at the top of Kobelco’s conventional excavator range in North America. The lineup progresses from the SK130LC-11 (32,800-pound operating weight) through machines such as the SK210LC-11, SK350LC-11 (video above), and SK520LC-11 before reaching the new flagship model. The jump from the SK520LC-11 to the SK850LC-11 is significant. Engine output increases from 463 horsepower to 512 horsepower, while operating weight climbs from approximately 121,000 pounds to more than 190,000 pounds. That places the SK850LC-11 squarely in the class of excavators that contractors deploy when production matters the most.

Hydraulics overview

Large excavators earn their keep through hydraulic performance, and Kobelco loaded the SK850LC-11 with features designed to keep material moving. The SK850LC-11 delivers maximum hydraulic flow of 2 x 133 gallons per minute. This big dog uses two variable displacement pumps, an OPT gear pump, and a pilot gear pump. The SK850LC-11 capitalizes on a pilot-controlled hydraulic system and embraces operational tech like eco mode, auto idle stop, and automatic engine deceleration to reduce fuel burn during less demanding tasks. One of the more interesting features is Kobelco’s independent travel function. The system dedicates one hydraulic pump to travel and another to implement functions. Operators can travel, lift, swing, and carry loads simultaneously without the sluggish feel that often appears when multiple hydraulic functions compete for flow.

The machine includes lots of cool tech features:

  • Unlimited-use Power Boost (instantly increases the machine’s digging force by about 10 percent)
  • Heavy Lift mode (increases the machine’s hydraulic system pressure by about 10 percent)
  • Hydraulic pressure release from the cab
  • Adjustable attachment flow settings
  • Standard K-Load onboard weighing system
  • Komexs telematics
  • Three-camera visibility system
  • 10-inch touchscreen display
  • Attachment mode selection (auxiliary hydraulic flow rates for buckets, breakers, and nibblers are adjustable through the touchscreen)

Maintenance designed for long shifts

Big excavators don’t get breaks. They work all day. Mini excavators are made for on-off work. They sometimes sit. Massive 85-metric-ton excavators are made for non-stop work. So, they need constant maintenance love, and they need that maintenance to be accessible and simple. With that in mind, Kobelco added several features intended to simplify service access and cooling system maintenance. The SK850LC-11 comes equipped with a reversible cooling fan that clears debris from cooling packages with the flip of a switch. Removable cleanout screens further simplify cleaning.

Technicians also gain access to:

  • Left and right service walkways
  • Folding catwalks
  • Retractable undercarriage
  • Three track guides
  • Belly guards
  • Swivel guard
  • Auto-coil grease gun holder
  • Easily accessible filters and service points

Cab comfort gets a major update

Big excavators work all day, and that means operators have to sit in them and operate all day. Kobelco redesigned the cab environment with operator comfort in mind. The SK850LC-11 features a heated air-suspension seat with seven-way adjustment. The seat moves together with the armrests and hydraulic controls, helping reduce fatigue during long operating cycles.

Operators also receive:

  • Large 10-inch color monitor
  • Jog-dial machine controls
  • LED-backlit switches and dials
  • Multiple HVAC vents
  • Bluetooth radio
  • Hands-free calling
  • Smartphone holder
  • USB charging port
  • 12-volt power outlet

The monitor displays machine information, maintenance intervals, fuel consumption data, and feeds from the standard three-camera visibility system, which provides up to a 270-degree view around the excavator.

Safety features

Kobelco includes several standard safety features on the SK850LC-11. Highlights include a Level II FOPS cab guard, battery disconnect switch, six front LED work lights, four rear LED work lights, rear swing flashers, boom and arm safety valves, and enhanced visibility systems. The overhead cab guard can also tilt open for easier cleaning. For contractors working around personnel, trucks, and support equipment, visibility remains a major focus.

What’s the final verdict?

For fleets working in quarries, heavy civil projects, mining support operations, and mass excavation applications, the SK850LC-11 adds another ultra-large production excavator option. Its combination of telematics, onboard weighing, simplified maintenance, and operator comfort positions it as one of the most capable large excavators entering the North American market in 2026.
