A report by Lancaster Farming cited police who said the driver was “likely going too fast” and lost control of the truck. Rittle was “partially ejected” from the truck and died at the hospital.

The impact damaged the barn, built in 1901, so badly it had to be torn down. The truck also damaged an electric pole, causing some wires to spark and start a grass fire. The farm’s owner was able to put out the fire before it spread.
