Top 100: Simpler EGR Retains Simpler Turbo

Sept. 28, 2010

To meet on-road emissions limits, Volvo developed V-Pulse technology to recirculate some exhaust gas into the combustion chamber. The system does not require a variable-geometry turbocharger, but instead captures pressure pulses created by the exhaust valves to push exhaust through the EGR cooler. Volvo's 12-liter, six-cylinder engines also have rate-shaping fuel injectors that reduce peak cylinder temperature and unburned fuel, which makes the engine run cleaner. Surcharge is $3,500 more than the cost of predecessors.
