Boom collapses in Hell's Kitchen

Editor's note: This article has been updated.

Twelve people were injured when the boom of a tower crane tumbled onto 10th Avenue in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood. Earlier reports cited six injuries. Three of the injured were firefighters, and none suffered life-threatening injuries, according to news reports.

The preliminary cause of the fire that started in the crane's operator's area is hydraulic fluid leaking onto a hot area near the engine. Officials said all inspections of the crane were up to date.

According to news reports, the crane’s engine caught fire as it was lifting 16 tons of concrete. The operator tried to extinguish it but could not, according to the reports, and exited the crane. As the boom fell, it hit a nearby building.

Six people were injured, two of whom were firefighters. Three were taken to local hospitals.

The crane fire was 45 stories up, and photos from the scene show water being sprayed from nearby buildings.
