The EH5000 stretched Hitachi's rigid-frame haul truck line, with a maximum payload on its heavy-duty body of 351 tons and gross weight of 1,164,426 pounds. Engine choices include the Detroit Diesel 4000 rated at 2,700 horsepower or 3,000 horsepower and the Cummins QSK60. The AC drive system that Hitachi developed with Siemens will handle 6,000 horsepower. The brushless system produces travel speeds of more than 40 mph. Hitachi says the AC drive is also 2 to 3 percent more fuel efficient than the equivalent DC system. Estimated list price: $3.95 million.
