Two JCB apprentices won first place in the mechatronics division at the recent SkillsUSA national championships. Anthony Smith and Victor De La Cruz’s practical skills were put to the test in pneumatic technology, electrical systems, mechanical systems, and general automation techniques. The two are now able to compete in the WorldSkills championships held in Shanghai in Fall 2021.
Smith and De La Cruz chose to compete in the mechatronics division, coinciding with their major in industrial maintenance systems technology at Savannah Technical Institute. They both aim to eventually pursue a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
“As we prepared for the competition, we relied on the knowledge we gained from working with JCB...,” said Victor De La Cruz. “This is the first national win for JCB apprentices, and we couldn’t be more honored. We know that as we gain additional experience and skills that we will be prepared to compete in the WorldSkills competition with confidence.”
SkillsUSA is a national membership association serving high school, college, and middle school students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service occupations.
