California consumes bulk of renewable diesel: report

More than it produces

Nearly all U.S. renewable diesel went to California in 2021, according to a report by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), which says that the state consumed eight times more than it produced in 2021. Imported fuel came from not only other states in the union, but also from Singapore.

The government agency report cites an 18-fold growth of consumption since California passed its Low Carbon Fuel Standard in 2011. That year, 1 million barrels were used; in 2021, 28 million.

California is the only state that offers a rebate to customers who purchase renewable diesel specifically, increasing renewable diesel use in the state as it becomes more economically competitive with biodiesel, according to EIA.
