How big are the largest energy storage containers?

Picture the containers on cargo ships and railcars that can transfer to the back of on-highway heavy trucks. Yes, that big.

One Chinese equipment manufacturer sees a need for 66-ton containers stacked up to five units high, because it has come out with a 71-ton capacity reach stacker as a “world’s first.”

The XCMG XCS65K, certified in China this spring, is designed for the heavy-duty logistics involved in large-scale energy storage projects.

“[This] isn’t just an upgrade—it’s the core driver behind efficient project delivery in large-scale energy storage,” Miao Fei, vice general manager of XCMG Port Machinery, said in a statement. “With its unmatched lifting capacity and precision, we’re solving the industry’s toughest logistics challenges.”

Technology aboard

The machine features millimeter-level control via a high-precision micro-motion system, AI-driven anti-tip technology that adjusts to load conditions in real time, 360-degree panoramic imaging, and intelligent braking.

It looks a little like a telehandler on steroids with four front wheels (there are two in the rear) and a large counterweight.

Specs are scarce, but World Cargo News has reported that the unit has close to a 23-foot wheelbase and weighs nearly 95 tons.

If you’re not familiar with XCMG, it makes just about everything, from MEWPs to pavers to excavators to rigid-frame dump trucks. Although the company doesn’t have a large presence here (there are distributors in Tampa and Las Vegas), it sells in 190 countries.
