A motorist was killed in a fiery crash on southbound Highway 99 near Galt, California, after the car collided with a construction truck and veered into the path of a tractor-trailer early Tuesday, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said.

CHP officials said the driver was traveling in the far-right lane of southbound Highway 99 south of Twin Cities Road when the sedan drifted left and sideswiped a slower-moving construction truck traveling in the far-left lane.

The impact sent the car veering right across all lanes of traffic and the shoulder before it left the freeway and came to rest on West Stockton Boulevard, directly in the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer.

The tractor-trailer’s driver was unable to avoid the sedan and crashed into it, CHP said. The sedan became fully engulfed in flames after the impact.
The car’s driver died at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remained under investigation, and CHP officials said it was not known whether alcohol or drugs were factors.
