If you think there’s a generational change going on in the construction workforce, you’re right—and it’s going to become more pronounced.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that by 2033, approximately 24% of employees will be age 55 or older, up from 15% in 2003. That means even more young workers will be coming aboard.
And we’ve seen studies suggesting that more young people are considering the trades over college. One survey from ResumeBuilder.com shows that that 42% of Gen Zers are currently working in or pursuing a blue-collar or skilled trade job, including 37% of those with a bachelor’s degree.
Among Gen Z college grads, 34% say they are already in a trade role, and 3% plan to pursue one.
New workers may seek new styles
We already know that many younger workers have more digital (and joystick) skills thanks to the gamification of, well, everything. We also know there’s been a generational shift in technology savvy as tools like virtual reality and AI are readily embraced.
Now consider PPE. Will it change along with the industry’s median age? There are already styled pairs of protective eyewear.
Footwear and work boot maker Keen is betting on it. The company has developed a work sneaker, called Speedworks, specifically for a new generation of workers in the construction, manufacturing, and distribution industries.
Keen perceives younger workers favor “nimble and protective footwear with a more modern aesthetic” over the traditional work boot design.
A company spokesperson was unable to quantify a change in preferences but said “We see the buying habits from a manufacturer perspective” and that they have seen “the innovation in material in a work sneaker incorporated into heavy duty work boots.”
Inside Speedworks is a compression-resistant Keen ReGEN+ midsole the company says provides 60% energy return with every step, and carbon-fiber safety toes that are 15% lighter than steel with an asymmetrical toe box for flexibility and toe protection.
The carbon-fiber construction allows a less obtrusive fit, enabling the toes to bend and flex more naturally.

The work sneaker also features a mesh upper with no-sew overlays manufactured to deliver all-day airflow and lightweight durability. Underneath, Keen has engineered a slip-resistant, non-marking rubber outsole meant for traction indoors or outdoors.
A quick walk in a sample pair reveals the shoes are indeed comfortable and lighter than anticipated. After a time, it might be hard to tell whether they’re for a job site or a casual night out.
Keen Utility’s Speedworks is available for both men and women in multiple colors.
