The Concrete Foundations Association (CFA) recognized Kaser & Maeyens Inc., a poured concrete foundations company from South Bend, IN, as one of four 2008 winners of its Basement of the Year awards. Concrete Pumping of Michiana, LLC placed the concrete for the basement using its Putzmeister 47Z-meter truck-mounted concrete boom pump.

This award recognizes the accomplishment of professional contractors as they apply their skill and creativity to residential structures of all sizes, commercial projects, above-grade projects and anything else that requires out-of-the-box thinking.

Kaser & Maeyens took top honors in the category for Residence 2,000—5,000 square feet (186—465 m2) for their South Bend Orange Road Project.

Features of the Orange Road Project include:

  • Footings required 44.75 cubic yards (34 m3) of concrete with 4,117 pounds (1,867 kg) of steel
  • Walls required 107 cubic yards of concrete (82 m3) with 2,909 pounds (1,320 m) of steel

According to Lynn Springer, co-owner of Concrete Pumping of Michiana, his 47Z-meter boom pump placed 152 cubic yards (116 m3) of a 3,500-psi (241 bar) concrete mix for this project. "The 47Z’s horizontal reach helped immensely for this project," notes Springer. "Its horizontal reach of 138 feet one inch (42.09 m) made it simple to place the concrete exactly where it needed to be for the unique footings and walls."
