More Mining Jobs to Automate: CEO

May 9, 2019

Andrew Mackenzie, CEO of BHP Group, told The Wall Street Journal that he expects automation to make mining jobs safer, specifically in the operation of trucks and drills. He said current automation has made small changes, but he expects bigger changes ahead.

“The whole future of work is one of our top challenges to figure out,” he told the newspaper, “because clearly there are opportunities for us to make our operations more productive or environmentally friendly and safer.” He told the paper that operators of equipment could also be able control the machines from a remote location.

Mackenzie also told the paper that BHP is targeting a 50-50 male-female workforce within a decade.
