After nearly six years of planning and fundraising, construction has begun on a community park and memorial wall at the intersection of North 37th Street and West Lisbon Avenue in Milwaukee's Metcalfe Park neighborhood.

The project is intended to bring healing and stability to a neighborhood that has experienced poverty, crime and violence.

The park's focal point will be a 10-foot wall that memorializes victims of homicide in the neighborhood and celebrates people who have worked hard to stop violence. Its tiles will be inscribed with the names of those individuals and with poetry.

The Metcalfe Park neighborhood project involves local artists, residents and students from area schools.

Eppstein Uhen Architects donated architectural services for the project; CG Schmidt is donating construction services; and Central Redi-mix is donating materials.
