Median Project Completed

Sept. 28, 2010

A 1-mile-long median landscaping enhancement project on Telegraph Road from Square Lake Road to Orchard Lake Road in Bloomfield Township began and was completed in July. The $170,000 project involved planting trees, installing an irrigation system, and seeding. United Landscape, Inc., of Washington Township, was the prime contractor for the project.

Mark Reuter, vice president of Operations for United Lawnscape, Inc., said that the traffic and the existing plant material in the island were challenges that had to be overcome.

Mark Reuter, vice president of Operations for United Lawnscape, Inc., said that the traffic and the existing plant material in the island were challenges that had to be overcome.

"There were existing trees in the island that we had to work around," Reuter said. United Lawnscape used Case 450 skid-steer loaders and a Case 580 backhoe.

"Because of the size of the island and the existing trees, we needed smaller equipment to run on the island. We couldn't use larger equipment because of the width of the island," Reuter said.

"Because of its 360-degree turning radius, the compact skid-steer loader has a huge advantage."

The project involved planting approximately 70 trees, including white pines, bald cypress, tamarack, and maples. Trost Irrigation, of Lake Orion, was the irrigation subcontractor for the project.
