Komatsu's Skid-Steer Loaders Tout Big-Machine Look

Sept. 28, 2010

Model SK714-5 is equipped with a 47-hp Komatsu engine and has a 1,350-pound operating capacity.

Komatsu has moved into the North American skid-steer-loader market with two entries that have several features reflecting the latest in power management and operator control—features typically found on larger machines.

The new units are Model SK714-5 and the SK815. The larger SK815, with an operating weight of 5,785 pounds, is equipped with Automatic Power Control, which is a hydraulic system that is designed to allow full utilization of engine power without overload. The operator can work with full power during any jobsite application without worrying about the engine stalling out. Optional high-flow auxiliary hydraulics are available, letting the SK815 use many high-flow attachments. The SK815 offers shift-on-the-go speed changes from 6.5 to a speedy 10 mph.

Additionally, the skid-steer features Komatsu's Proportional Pressure Control joysticks that operate travel and loader operations. Smooth, precise handling is managed by the HydrauMind hydraulic system, which allows the operator to monitor the performance of the machine. Accompanying Closed Load Sensing hydraulics are designed for both single and simultaneous movements, ensuring maximum control of bucket positioning.

The operator's compartment draws special attention as well. It is built so that all instrumentation is within the peripheral view of the operator, and all function switches are waterproof and placed within easy reach of the operator to ensure comfort and convenience. The compartment also features a wide entrance with large grab handles, and an operator restraint bar, which also serves as a forearm rest. The easy-to-read gauge panel and warning-light system is built into the restraint bar and is easily engaged. In addition, a Loader Float Function can be engaged on the joystick for enhanced back dragging or attachment application. The seat acts as a safety switch, which deactivates the ground drive and hydraulic circuits while activating the wet disc brakes if the operator unintentionally leaves the seat. Three control patterns are available, from traditional hand and foot controls to foot controls to all hand controls.

The operator's compartment also provides outstanding visibility. With standard top and rear shatter-proof windows, large side screen area, and a superior view of the bucket, cutting edge and corners, it gives the operator 360-degree jobsite visibility.

By exerting 3,950 pounds of bucket breakout force, the SK815 provides plenty of power yet maintains fuel efficiency, thanks to a four-in-line cylinder diesel engine. The 45-degree dump and 30-degree rollback angles of the bucket allow for a faster dump cycle and load retention over rough terrain.

Model SK714-5

This machine features easy-to-use Proportional Pressure Control joysticks combined with the HydrauMind hydraulic system. With an operating weight of 5,565 pounds, the SK714-5 is equipped with a 47-hp engine and has a 1,350-pound operating capacity. Like the SK815, the operator's compartment features a wide entrance with large grab handles, built-in gauges and warning lights.

The performance of the skid-steer is built around a two-speed ground drive, with shift-on-the-go speed changes from 6.5 to 10 mph in load-and-carry applications. Auxiliary hydraulic control provides the needed power to front-mounted hydraulic attachments. The foot pedal can be utilized with Komatsu or optional control patterns. The optional control patterns can be engaged by flipping a lever. A standard universal front attachment quick coupler enables common attachments to be changed quickly and with little effort. Auxiliary hydraulic with flat-faced connectors also are standard. Most attachments from an owner's fleet can be utilized on the skid-steer. The unit produces 16 gpm of auxiliary hydraulic flow at 2,770 psi.

Another innovation found on the SK714-5 is a design that allows easy access to service all power-train components, thanks to a tilt-forward ROPS structure. Ease of maintenance is further enhanced with a single multi-viscosity oil requirement for engine, hydraulic, and chain-case lubrication, as well as 250-hour pin greasing intervals.

A removable polyvinyl fuel tank is corrosion resistant and guards against condensation. A large opening with a strainer makes it easy to re-fuel and an external level indicator is visible to ensure safety during re-fueling. The tank is easily removed with a fuel shut off and quick release. The radiator and oil cooler is accessible for cleaning from either side and is tiltable for additional inspection.
