JCB Launches Be Your Own Boss Program for Hispanic Construction Entrepreneurs

JCB’s new Be Your Own Boss initiative combines financing, coaching, bilingual resources, and compact equipment to help construction workers launch their own companies.

Compact equipment is the perfect machine category for owner/operators. One extremely versatile machine like a compact track loader or mini excavator can spearhead an entire construction business.

JCB recently highlighted that link between entrepreneurship and tool-carrying compact equipment. The company just launched a new initiative called Be Your Own Boss — or “Sé Tu Propio Patrón” — aimed at helping construction workers start and grow their own companies. The program focuses heavily on Hispanic workers in construction, a workforce that makes up roughly one-third of the entire U.S. construction industry, according to JCB. In states like Texas, California, and Florida, that number climbs even higher. I’ll also note here, JCB’s currently building a $500 million facility in San Antonio. From the press release:

“With Be Your Own Boss, we’re not just selling equipment; we’re investing in people who are essential to the construction industry,” said Marc-André Dubois, Vice President of Marketing at JCB North America. “This program reflects our long-term commitment to helping hardworking Hispanic professionals transform their experience and determination into successful, sustainable businesses.”

What is JCB’s Be Your Own Boss program?

The Be Your Own Boss initiative combines financing help, business education, bilingual resources, dealer support, and startup guidance into one package. According to JCB, the program includes:

  • Bilingual training and business resources
  • Business coaching and mentorship
  • Initial capital support
  • Financing options for ITIN holders
  • Financing programs for first-time buyers
  • Connections to local JCB dealers
  • Guidance on growing a construction company

From the press release

“Hispanics have built the homes, roads, and cities of America — it’s time we also build our own legacy,” said Sergio Terreros, President of the National Hispanic Contractors Association. “Thanks to JCB for launching this visionary program that empowers our community to shift from workers to owners, from doing the job to leading the business. This is how we create opportunity, pride, and generational success.”

That financing angle

A report by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute found that 70 percent of Hispanic entrepreneurs rely on personal savings to start businesses. Another stat from the Hispanic Construction Council says 90 percent of Hispanic construction firms struggle to get support from traditional banks. So this program tackles a real-world problem. Plenty of operators know how to run equipment. Far fewer know how to secure financing, structure a business, buy machines, or navigate growth. I’m already a fan of this program.

JCB’s is currently building a $500 million facility in San Antonio

I recently visited JCB's new $500 million San Antonio facility, and the place feels enormous — 1 million square feet, 400 acres, and (eventually) a working cattle ranch. The facility will focus on manufacturing rental equipment, including machines like telehandlers and aerial lifts, which are mostly sold to rental houses (not entrepreneurs). But JCB is connecting that Texas expansion to something bigger — helping construction workers become business owners.

San Antonio feels like the center of JCB’s North American push

When we toured JCB’s San Antonio campus last year, the scale stood out immediately. This isn’t some small expansion project tucked behind an industrial park. It’s a massive manufacturing investment with room to grow for decades. The company says the facility will eventually employ 1,500 people over five years, and the campus has personality. There are plans for recreation areas, dealer demonstration spaces, customer events, and yes, a cattle ranch with longhorns roaming the property. It’s very Texas. Very JCB. That broader strategy lines up with Be Your Own Boss. JCB is planting deeper roots in the U.S. market while also trying to build loyalty with smaller contractors and emerging business owners.

JCB is also sharpening its compact equipment lineup

The company recently introduced the new 250T compact track loader and teased the upcoming 290T CTL. We covered both machines recently, and they fit directly into JCB’s rental and small-contractor strategy. The 250T hits one of the hottest CTL size classes in construction right now.

Key specs include:

  • 74-horsepower engine
  • 2,429-pound rated operating capacity
  • Operating weight under 10,000 pounds
  • Standard- and high-flow hydraulics
  • Ground pressure under 5 psi
  • Towability behind a 3/4-ton pickup

Then there’s JCB’s signature single-arm boom design. The side-entry door remains one of the most unique features in compact equipment. It improves visibility, makes entry easier, and eliminates climbing over attachments. That’s especially attractive for newer operators and rental customers. The teased 290T appears positioned to add more lift and breakout performance later this year. Learn more about those machines right over here.
