Leica Geosystems and Liebherr have expanded their collaboration with the factory integration of Leica Geosystems’ sensor chain across Liebherr’s Generation 8 mobile and crawler excavators.

The company began launching its Generation 8 crawler excavators in 2019.

The new solution provides contractors with a clear upgrade path to advanced 3D machine control.

Learn how machine control can cut costs

The integrated sensor chain from Leica Geosystems will serve as the foundation for Liebherr’s machine control guidance systems, including weighing systems and bucket fill assist, while delivering  easy-to-use 2D directly through the Liebherr in-cab display.

Leica Geosystems’ 3D machine control system is optionally available, fully integrated via the Liebherr factories, or as a later aftermarket upgrade. Leica is part of Hexagon.

Most of the new G8 mobile and crawler excavators will feature Leica Geosystems’ 2D machine control as standard, eliminating the need for aftermarket installation post equipment purchase and reducing machine downtime.

The solution combines Liebherr’s operator interface with Leica Geosystems’ proven 2D user experience for setup and calibration.

Scalable Leica machine control

Customers can specify their G8 machines with 3D-ready or full 3D machine control options, including semi-automatic features, directly from the factory. These options include dual GNSS configurations and Leica MC1 3D technology. Ordering 3D-ready ex-factory ensures seamless future upgrades without additional machine downtime.

Production is scheduled to begin this spring, with first deliveries expected shortly thereafter.
