Alaska highway project estimate doubles

New funding sources sought

The estimate for a bypass project around Cooper Landing, Alaska, has more than doubled since 2018, sending the state scrambling for additional funding, including possible grants available through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).

The original estimate came in at $350 million, but now the highway is projected to cost $850 million. Construction of the new road began in 2019.
