Labor Still an Issue with Autonomous Mining
A Rio Tinto mine in Australia has implemented autonomous haul trucks, robots, and even driverless trains, but, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, it is not solving the labor problem.
The labor problem just shifted from equipment operators to specially skilled tech workers.
The report cited an Australian trade official who said automation has not led to mass layoffs, but rather the creation of new roles.
