State Legislatures Power Up for EVs

State legislatures are gathering votes to build out the charging infrastructure they believe will be needed to sustain the influx of electric vehicles citizens in their states will purchase in coming years, according to a report by The Pew Charitable Trusts.

The reports cites plans by automakers to build and sell nearly 1 million electric vehicles this year. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) also includes billions in federal dollars earmarked for the construction of electric charging stations. Combined, the incentive for states to prepare is moving both Republican- and Democrat-led state governments to put money against charging infrastructure.

The report cites California’s Gov. Gavin Newsom’ proposal of $6 billion for EV incentives as well as Maryland’s Gov. Larry Hogan’s investments in EVs and charging stations.
