The South Dakota Department of Transportation uses a system to monitor the weather and predict how to maintain its highways in the winter, according to a report by KEVN.
The system, Maintenance Decision Support System (MDSS), allows the department to track incoming storm systems, giving it a few days to prepare. The department uses the head start to ensure proper staffing, equipment, and decide on treatments for the roads.
Trucks also carry sensors, tracking the treatment materials in the bed as well as precipitation.
