The Iowa Transportation Commission has approved the use of nearly $1.6 million in federal funding to maintain the viability of Iowa's intercity bus service. Funding is appropriated for the multifaceted program aimed at preserving existing intercity bus routes tying smaller communities in Iowa to the nationwide intercity bus system, and assisting startup routes in serving rural communities that do not have services.

In addition, funding is also available to upgrade equipment and facilities, including adding accessibility features required by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Several of the projects being funded involve carriers starting new or expanding existing intercity service in the state.
