St. Louis – Concrete Strategies LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Clayco Inc., has received recognition for outstanding quality in the use of concrete from the Concrete Council. The company was awarded two Quality Concrete Awards for its work on Saint Louis University's Chaifetz Arena and Joan and Joseph Lipic Cloister Walk. Saint Louis University's new $70.2-million Chaifetz Arena is a 10,600-seat basketball and multipurpose facility that includes a practice facility and all of the institution's athletic offices. The three-level, 269,000-square-foot structure required $11 million worth of concrete work, which was completed in just eight months. Clayco served as design-builder, and Mackey Mitchell & Associates and Sink Combs Dethlefs were the architects. Located at the heart of the medical campus, the Joan and Joseph Lipic Cloister Walk provides functional, easy access throughout the campus forresearchers and scientists at Saint Louis University. The walk serves as the connector between the university's medical school complex and the Edward A. Doisy Research Center. At more than 300 feet, the brick and concrete structure is the longest covered walkway on the campus. Unique in its construction, the tilt-up structure was built to achieve LEED certification with the U.S. Green Building Council. Cannon Design was the architect.
