Lull’s 644E-42 is one of three telehandlers in the Lull product line manufactured by JLG Industries, all of which offer the Transaction boom. The horizontal load placement system is exclusive to Lull and Pettibone’s Traverse product line. This feature allows the entire boom to slide forward horizontally without moving the machine an inch.
To accomplish horizontal load placement, the three-section boom is mounted on a sub-frame that carries the entire assembly. Riding on massive rollers and rails, the carriage assembly can slide forward 80 inches on the main chassis. Although this feature has a variety of applications, it is especially useful when stocking scaffold. When extended, the unit can take 500 pounds to its maximum forward reach of 35'6".
Lull models have previously featured an inline drivetrain. Gradually, JLG has been redesigning the Lull lineup, moving the engines, all major components, and service points to a side-mounted pod location. The lockable ABS composition hood swings high to allow full service access. Powering the Lull 644E-42 is a 99-hp Cummins B4.5T engine. ZF supplies the axles and transmission. In the engine compartment, the battery is located up front for easy jump starts. Service access is excellent to everything except the starter, which must be reached by going underneath the engine. To keep some distance between the fuel and hydraulic fill points, the fuel fill is located behind the cab.
Although the sub-assembly required to carry the Transaction boom assembly traditionally created a viewing obstacle to the side and rear of the machine, the view on the new design is surprisingly unobstructed. Even though the cab is designed to sit low, visibility is aided by a rather high seat position coupled with a wide-open cab design.
Three fully proportional pilot joysticks provide control of all cab functions. The forward most joystick operates the transversing boom and tilt attachments. A button on top of the joystick works the standard auxiliary hydraulics. The second joystick is for up/down boom functions and telescope in/out. The third joystick is for frame sway, which is 12 degrees right and left. On the dash, controls include the parking brake, transmission declutch, and three modes of steering. Fuel level, tachometer, hour meter, and hydraulic oil temperature gauges are also located on the dash. Indicator lights are included for battery charge, transmission temperature, hydraulic oils, and filter restrictors. As with all the JLG telehandlers in this size category, there is no rear axle stabilization system.
Fenders are standard on the 644E-42, as well as 13x24 pneumatic tires. Foam-filled, steel belted, and rock tread tires are options.
The 644E-42 has quick-attach auxiliary power as standard. It also now incorporates the standard coupling system that JLG implemented across all brands of its construction telehandlers. Attachments available include standard, side tilt and swing carriages; pallet, lumber and block forks; truss booms with or without a winch; a variety of buckets; sheet material handler; sweeper; and auger.
