Weighing 55,000 pounds, Gradall's XL5100 III wheeled excavator uses a single Tier 3 Detroit Diesel Mercedes engine instead of two Cummins engines, as its predecessor did. This conserves fuel, the company says, while producing greater horsepower and operating both the truck carrier and the upperstructure. Upper-structure swing speed has increased 33 percent, and breakout force increased from 21,900 to 24,900 pounds. New electronic joysticks replace hydraulic controls, and three joystick patterns are available. Models are offered in 6×4 and 6×6 configurations and can travel on highways at 55 mph. Estimated list price: $320,500 to $340,000.
