Komatsu exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)
Komatsu's strategy to meet EPA's 2006 deadline for Tier 3 diesel exhaust emissions promises to improve fuel efficiency up to 15 percent. The combustion chamber design is expected to bring the company's small diesels into compliance. Mid-sized engines will need cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) to cut emissions without sacrificing fuel economy. Komatsu developed the twin-valve system with electronic-over-hydraulic control and a heavy-duty EGR cooler. The electronically controlled common-rail fuel system will push injection pressures as high as 26,000 psi.
