JCB Reacts to Tariffs Tussle

New tax on machines to add "millions of pounds" in costs.
Aug. 25, 2025

JCB head Graeme Macdonald said new U.S. tariffs on “finished goods,” whole machines exported to the States, will add “hundreds of millions of pounds” to its costs.

Macdonald told The Times that the Trump Administration’s move to expand tariffs on steel and aluminum to include machine were “punitive” and has asked for U.K. ministers to intervene.

JCB said the tariffs would affect its recently announced contract to build backhoe loaders for the U.S. Marine Corps.

Macdonald also told The Times that the new tariffs were “particularly galling” in light of the fact that the company has been expanding U.S. production capacity in recent months, including a doubling of JCB's new facility in San Antonio, Texas.
