A report by CBS News New York cited Yegal Shamash, deputy building commissioner, who said the accident was “totally preventable.”
A hydraulic hose disconnected and fuel leaked onto the hot crane deck, causing the fire that led to the tower crane collapsing into the streets below.
According to the news report, Shamash said safety recommendations included maintenance and inspections to prevent fires, installing a fire detection system, and keeping to 20-pound fire extinguishers on the cranes.
