Cat's Largest Telehandler Reaches to 56 Feet

Sept. 28, 2010

The TH580B's service interval for engine oil, filter and routine lubrication is 500 hours, and 1,000 hours for the hydraulic/transmission filter.

The latest addition to the Caterpillar telehandler range is also the largest. The new TH580B, with an operating weight of 27,465 pounds, has a rated load capacity of 11,000 pounds, and its four-section boom allows placing loads as high as 56 feet, or reaching forward 42 feet. The telehandler also features three steering modes—two-wheel, crab and coordinated—and has stabilizers that provide ± 5 degrees of leveling, plus a frame-leveling system with ± 10 degrees of adjustment.

According to Cat, the unit's power train is designed as a total system to optimize performance and service life. The high-torque-rise, emissions-certified Cat 3054E diesel engine—a four-cylinder model with a 4.41-liter displacement—delivers 120 gross horsepower. An efficient, indirectly powered fan (driven by the engine through the transmission) handles engine cooling by drawing in clean ambient air through a forward-facing cooling pack.

The "powersyncro" transmission, which allows travel speeds to 20 mph, is designed specifically for telehandler use and has four speeds forward and three reverse. Caterpillar's transmission-mounting design eliminates the need for a separate transfer case, and thus simplifies the overall drive-train layout. The new TH580B uses oil-immersed disc brakes in the front axle, and can be equipped with an optional differential lock.

The TH580B can be fitted with either a canopy or an enclosed cab. Once in the suspension seat (an air-suspension model is optional), the operator will find an electro-hydraulic joystick that allows three simultaneous functions, plus operation of the machine's auxiliary hydraulic system. The machine can be fitted with a second auxiliary-hydraulic service if attachments requiring more than one power source are to be used. An electronic monitoring system keeps the operator informed of critical system parameters.

For expanded versatility, an integrated tool-carrier front end is standard, and the hydraulic quick coupler allows switching non-powered attachments from the operator's seat. New tools for this machine include a material-handling arm, universal standard carriage and side-shift carriage. Available as optional equipment are a rear tow hook, tire choices (including foam-filled) and a lighting package for the boom and cab.
