Caterpillar M314, M318 Wheel Excavators

March 6, 2020

According to Caterpillar, two new Cat Next Generation wheel excavators, the M314 and M318,
feature multiple design updates and advanced hydraulic systems that more efficiently power
attachments, including the Cat tilt-rotate system. Both new models use the Cat C4.4 engine
meeting EU Stage V, U.S. EPA Tier 4-Final, and Korea Tier 4-Final emission standards. Swing
torque is up 15 percent for the new models, compared with their predecessors, and travel speeds
are in excess of 21 mph.

Cabs are new, with more room and easier ingress/exit, and visibility is enhanced with a low-
profile hood; larger front, rear, and side windows; and small cab pillars. Standard rearview and
sideview cameras further improve visibility. Two cab designs are available, deluxe and premium,
with the deluxe featuring a heated/air-adjustable seat and the premium using a heated/cooled
seat.

The excavators use an in-cab push-button for starting, or the Operator I.D. function, or can be
remotely started via a Bluetooth key fob. The large, 10-inch touch-screen monitor and jog-dial
control provide easy-to-use navigation of machine controls, says Caterpillar, and operators can
program power mode and joystick configuration to their preference. An auto axle lock detects
when the service brake must be locked or unlocked, reducing the number of actions required by
the operator.

The new Cat M314 and M318 wheel excavators use the cat Product Link telematics technology,
which includes such data as machine location, hours, fuel usage, idle time, and diagnostic codes.
With new Remote Troubleshoot technology, dealer technicians can perform remote diagnostic
testing, and the Remote Flash system allows remote updating with the latest software versions.

Maintenance enhancements include extended filter-change intervals, and a new hydraulic-oil
filter is designed to improve filtration, while providing a longer (3,000-hour) service interval.
Fuel cleanliness is enhanced via a new two-level fuel-filtration system, and filter life and
maintenance intervals are, tracked on the in-cab monitor. Oil-sampling ports are accessible from
ground level.

Operating weights for the M314 range from 15,000 to 18,000 pounds, and for the M318, 17,500
to 19,950 pounds. Horsepower ratings are 110 and 129, respectively.
