Bomag has redesigned its BW90AD-5 tandem vibratory roller with a new operator’s platform featuring intuitive controls and improved all-around visibility. An upgraded engine and maintenance improvement are also included.

The roller is a member of Bomag’s “light” construction family, and it is designed for small and medium asphalt compaction projects, the company says. The new operator’s platform has a multifunctional travel lever and Smart Drive steering wheel, which has a smaller diameter to allow space for operator comfort as well as a clear view of the controls. An adjustable seat provides added comfort as well as a clear sight line to the drums.

The dashboard has circular instrumentation for a modern look and features warning signals, hour meter, and fuel-level indicator.

A 20.2-horsepower Kubota D902 diesel powers the roller, and Ecomode system automatically idles the engine during inactivity. The unit also has Bomag’s Intelligent Vibration Control package for consistent compaction quality, the company says.

The working width is 35.4 inches, and the roller delivers 3,822 pounds of centrifugal force at a frequency of 3,780 vpm. Operating weight is 3,527 pounds.

Travel motors are contained within the vibratory drums, giving the machine a compact design that is suited for operation in tight spaces. The company says this design eliminates the need for additional compaction with vibratory plates.

The BW90D-5 has a 26.4-gallon water tank with pressurized spray system. A windscreen protects the water spray nozzles, which are triple-filtered to ensure that sufficient water reaches the drums even in strong winds. Each drum has two flexible scrapers.

Maintenance features include a durable composite hood that allows easy access to the engine and a steering column that can be quickly opened to view central electronics. A bolt-on articulating and oscillating joint is maintenance-free.

Safety features include a spring-applied, hydraulically released parking brake; ROPS with retractable seat belt; back-up alarm; emergency stop button; and front and rear working lights for night operation.
