Light weight, high ground clearance, and proven design are claimed for a “global” family of high-capacity hub-reduction axles being brought to North America early this summer by ArvinMeritor. The axles offer a wide ratio range to meet the needs of virtually any on-/off-highway application, as well as a host of suspension adaptations and brake offerings. They feature fabricated housings, which help save up to 600 pounds, depending on model; streamlined carriers for increased ground clearance; and four-planet, hub-reduction gear design used successfully in European applications, with ratios of 3.61 to 7.2. Single axles are rated at 26,000 to 35,000 pounds GVW, and tandems are rated at 52,000 to 70,000 pounds. The tandems are standard with needle bearings in inter-axle differentials, driver-controlled diff locks in both axles, and optimized driveline angles to reduce vibration.
