The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has confirmed that the Boring Co.’s $52.5 million people-mover transit system has passed its capacity tests, according to the Las Vegas Review Journal.
More than 300 volunteers were recruited to ride the 0.8-mile twin tunnels linking three stations for more than an hour straight. 62 Teslas carrying up to four passengers each were used in the capacity tests. The tests were conducted in 20-minute intervals and indicated that the system handled 4,431 passengers per hour.
According to the article, the test came at a time when social media critics posted YouTube videos saying the Boring Co. failed to deliver what it promised for the system.
LVCVA President and CEO Steve Hill tweeted that capacity tests were successful but waited until Tuesday’s LVCVA board meeting to allow his staff to elaborate on the details of the results.
The Boring Co. has said it would transport passengers in Tesla vehicles, but also indicated it planned to develop high-capacity vehicles capable of carrying up to 16 passengers at a time. According to the report, no plans for these vehicles are currently under consideration.
