Top 100: Tier 2 Diesels Make More Power Quietly

Sept. 28, 2010

Eight models of two-, three-, and four-cylinder engines in the Perkins' 400 Series replace the 100 Series with up to 10 percent more horsepower and up to 5-dB(A) noise reduction at low idle. Perkins went beyond meeting Tier 2, Stage II emissions legislation with the new range, which spans the 10- to 60-hp band. For example, the line's 60-hp flagship, the four-cylinder 404C-22T, is turbocharged for improved peak torque. A torque rise of 26 percent enables the engine to respond to sudden increases in demand without stalling. Estimated list price: $4,000 to $7,500.
