Top 100: Engine Control Is Most Fuel Efficient at Any Load

Sept. 28, 2010

Load-Based Speed Control is a patented Cummins electronic feature that helps truckers run at maximum fuel efficiency. The engine controller senses load and limits its own operating-speed range to the most fuel-efficient band to match the work demand. During high power requirements, the controller can provide the driver with an extended operating range. For example, the Load-Based system allows an 1,800-rpm engine to rev up to 2,000 rpm and to downshift at higher speeds. The feature is available at no charge on new Cummins ISM and ISX engines, and is standard on SmartTorque ratings.
