Study Reveals ‘Data Ownership Battle’ in Construction

Sept. 26, 2019

A study by Dodge Data & Analytics, in collaboration with e-Builder, has revealed the unintended consequences of project owners adopting project management software, and the impact it has when contractors use their own, disconnected software workflows.

The study highlights the challenges that arise when owners and contractors manage construction using different software applications without automated data exchange. According to a press release, for processes such as RFIs, submittals, and progress payments, this situation can drive increased cost, higher risks, and schedule delays.

Findings revealed that 42 percent of contractors report using both the owner’s project management applications, as well as specialized project management applications designed for contractors. This results in increased risk to the contractor due to duplicated effort. In addition, 73 percent of contractors report medium or high impact on the productivity of workers due to double-entry of construction data.
