Fishermen Killed by Unexploded Demolition Device: Lawsuit

Sept. 29, 2021

Three men who died in an explosion near Starved Rock State Park near Ottawa, Illinois, were killed by what lawyers say was an unexploded demolition device left behind by contractors.

In the lawsuit, the victims’ families allege that when the fishermen used a piece of pipe to prop up a frying pan as they cooked the fish, it was actually a “linear shape charge.”

The lawsuit names D. Construction, Gillan Construction, and Orica USA. The lawsuit claims the charge was left behind after the demolition of the Route 178 Bridge two months earlier.
