The basic design of the Grove GTK1100 crane incorporates a special wheeled carrier with a six-section telescopic mast that extends to 266 feet. At the top of the mast is a slewing "upperworks" assembly that incorporates the hoist drums and a telescopic luffing boom that extends to 197 feet. The base carrier uses four massive outriggers (8 feet high, 60 feet long, and arranged in a cross shape) that are connected via a pendant-tensioning system to four large lattice-type beams at the top of the mast (This configuration is designed to provide the crane's central ballast.)
