Worker Dies after Trench Collapse in Connecticut

Norwich—A local man who was the victim of a trench collapse on Hamilton Court has died, police confirmed Saturday.

Michael Dirocco, 60, of Norwich, died after the trench he was digging collapsed, partially burying Dirocco in five feet of dirt.

Police said the incident occurred at 6:16 p.m. on Friday adjacent to 7 Hamilton Court. The 90-foot long, five-foot wide and five-foot deep trench was being excavated to connect a sewer system from a private residence to the city sewer line.

Police said rescue crews quickly extricated Dirocco and began life-saving measures before he was transported to William W. Backus Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Norwich Police Department, Norwich Fire Department, Norwich Public Utilities and the Department of Labor’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health are investigating the incident.
