Los Angeles, CA— Vulcan Materials Company, Western Division, has received national recognition for environmental excellence and stewardship by the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA). Vulcan Materials Company is the nation's leading producer of construction aggregates.

The NSSGA awards program recognizes aggregates operations throughout the United States and Canada for extraordinary commitment to safety, for superior performance as environmental stewards, and for community involvement and support activities.

"We are pleased to be recognized for our company's commitment to safety and environmental principles by the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association," said Alan Wessel, president of Vulcan's Western Division. "This award is evidence of our efforts to lead in the construction aggregates industry through improvement in sustainable practices and policies."

NSSGA's "Environmental Excellence" awards honored several of Vulcan's Western Division's state-of-the-art plants, including the design and construction of its newest aggregates plant, Corona Aggregates and Asphalt in Corona, CA, which uses a downhill conveyor to generate electricity as it carries the rock to a processing plant below. According to the company, this technique helps to reduce and prevent pollution, and reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Also, Vulcan's Val Vista Rock and Sand, and W. 43rd Avenue plants in Arizona each received recognition from NSSGA for excellence in environmental stewardship for voluntarily implementing environmental management systems.

Vulcan's ISO 14001 certified Reliance Sand and Gravel and Irwindale Asphalt plant in Irwindale, CA, the first of its kind in the state to receive this exceptional certification, was also honored by NSSGA. According to Wessel, Vulcan's Irwindale Asphalt is one of a number of Western Division facilities that also produces Vulcan's newest asphalt product, WARMPAVE.
