Vermeer's CC155 Takes on the Tough Stuff

Sept. 28, 2010

Vermeer's new CC155 concrete cutter, powered by a 5.9-liter Cummins diesel engine, has a maximum cutting depth of 31 inches and a cutting-width range of 4.75 to 10 inches. This powerful machine is a natural for cutting streets for utility installation or for pothole repair. But it's equally adept, says the company, cutting and repairing joints on Interstate highways and bridges, installing longitudinal roadway drains, preparing streets and airport aprons for lighting installations, assisting in airport guidance-system installations and, of course, working as a demolition tool.

The Tier-2-compliant Cummins engine in the CC155 is rated at 155 horsepower (gross) and is electronically controlled. The engine, says Vermeer, delivers a steep, sustained torque output, which efficiently powers the machine's cutting system and ground-drive system. A low-speed, high-torque hydraulic motor drives the cutting wheel and the motor features a robust housing for strength and durability, along with high starting torque and radial-load capability. A Hi/Lo feature and the use of a variable-displacement pump, says the manufacturer, allows adjusting cutter-tip speed to match a range of cutting conditions.

The ground-drive system, which operates at a pressure of 5,000 psi, incorporates two hydraulic pumps and four, independent hydraulic wheel motors. The system is designed, says Vermeer, to deliver torque to the wheel motors in a balanced fashion, thus enhancing traction in most conditions and reducing tire spin during cutting operations. The 32.3×16.5-12 tires are foam-filled, and maximum transport speed is 10 mph.

Cutting width is determined by the width of the rock-cutting segments, 10 of which are bolted to the 2-inch-thick wheel and are replaceable. Cutting teeth are carbide-tipped and free-floating. Maximum cutting-tip speed is 932 feet per minute in low range, and 1,863 feet per minute in high range.
