A federal judge has ruled that Skanska USA was negligent in its preparation for Hurricane Sally, clearing the way for hundreds of claims to be filed against the contractor. Skanska is appealing the ruling, according to news reports.
According to a report by WKRG, the ruling allows a class action suit to move forward. The lawsuit includes individuals and businesses, according to the report.
One of Skanska’s barges broke free during the hurricane and damaged the Pensacola Bay Bridge in September of 2020.
A report in the Pensacola New Journal said the contractor sought to cap its liability at $1.2 million, but the judge’s denied it. The report suggests “thousands” of area commuters who were impacted by the bridge closure could join a class-action lawsuit seeking damages.
