Top 100: Operators Can Fine Tune Dash-5 Performance

Sept. 28, 2010

Operators of Komatsu's Dash-5 wheel loaders—four models from 187 to 261 horsepower—can activate the torque-converter lock-up system by flipping a switch. The converter will automatically lock-up when travel speed reaches 6.8 mph in third gear or 13 mph in fourth gear. The operator can also select the left-brake-pedal pressure at which the transmission cuts off. Higher cut-off pressure keeps the transmission engaged at higher engine rpm and hydraulic pressure for performance in ramp loading and stockpiling. Lower cut-off pressure disengages the transmission at lower engine speed and hydraulic pressure for more fuel-efficient operation on level ground. Ride control is a standard feature. Estimated prices: $200,000 to $300,000.
